5 Tips to Help You Create Candy Store Displays

Whether you’re just now starting a candy store or you’ve managed one for years, you can always use a few tips on how to create – and improve – your candy store displays.

Tip #1: Choose candy containers that work well with your merchandise.

Perhaps the most obvious tip within this list is the tip to make sure you choose candy containers and other fixtures that will attractively and conveniently display your merchandise.

Certain kinds of fixtures work best with certain kinds of candy. For example, you wouldn’t want to display lollipops in a gravity bin. As you’re browsing around for fixtures and other display tools, pay attention to the kinds of examples the wholesalers provide within the descriptions of their fixtures.

Tip #2: Choose candy containers that work well with your display space.

In addition to choosing containers that attractively and conveniently showcase your candy, you need to choose fixtures that you can attractively and conveniently situate in your display space.

Before you begin browsing for fixtures, get familiar with your display space. How much room do you have to work with? Once the fixture is set up, how much space will be left for your customers?

Tip #3: Work smart – not hard!

Obviously there will come times when you’ll need to restock your candy displays, but you can prolong those times by choosing display fixtures that hold bulk amounts of candy. Candy store bulk fixtures allow you display large quantities of product and, depending on how long your particular candy stays fresh, cut back on the amount of time you spent refilling the fixtures.

You can also make things a bit easier on yourself when you choose pre-filled candy displays. Such examples include gumball machines and lollipop trees, but you can also find pre-filled bucket racks designed to rotate or remain stationary – whichever model is most convenient for your customers.

Tip #4: Select display fixtures that will catch each customer’s eye.

Many kinds of display fixtures – such as plastic, acrylic, and glass containers, jars, and bins – are available in different colors, shapes, and styles. Don’t be afraid to give these fixtures a try in your store!

Tip #5: Always think about safety.

This last tip is perhaps the most important: As you’re planning your candy store display, think about the safety risks the display fixtures and the overall setup might create for your customers.

For example, if your store typically experiences a high volume of traffic – or caters mostly to families with young children – and you need simple containers to hold your candy, opt for acrylic bins and plastic containers and fish bowls over glass jars and fish bowls. The acrylic and plastic varieties work just as well as their glass cousins, but don’t impose the same level of risk should a customer accidentally bump into or drop one. And, if it does happen to break, pieces of acrylic or plastic aren’t as likely as pieces of glass to harm a customer.

You must also carefully think about how you plan to set up your displays. Whether your store is large and roomy or small and cozy, and whether it experiences high or low volumes of traffic at any given point during business hours, it’s important that you make sure all of your display fixtures are sturdy enough to hold your containers and merchandise and that you’ve properly assembled them and situated them in places throughout your store that won’t increase the chances they’ll be bumped into or cause a customer any inconvenience.

How to Keep Your Candy Displays Fresh and Unique

Regardless of what they sell, most retail stores change their displays from time to time. Whether you manage a candy store, or a grocery store, bookstore, toy store, or gas station, if your establishment sells candy, below are five ways you can make sure you keep your candy displays fresh and unique.

Tip #1: Mix and Match Various Candy Store Displays

When you showcase your candy, you don’t have to keep your displays to one or two of a certain kind of fixture. There are numerous kinds of fixtures at your fingertips, and it’s easy to keep your displays fresh and unique when you mix and match a few of them.

If you’re creating a point-of-purchase display, or POP display, for example, you could mix clear plastic containers or colored acrylic bins to hold small pieces of wrapped candy or gumballs with pre-filled lollipop trees or gumball machines.

Tip #2: Update Your Candy Display With the Changing Seasons

This is perhaps the most fun tip when it comes to keeping your showcases fresh and unique. It’s easy to find both display fixtures and candy in holiday themes and colors, and it’s easy to use existing fixtures and candy to create showcases with a holiday flare.

For example, during Halloween you could create a gumball display using orange and black gumballs. You could do the same during Christmas using red and green gumballs. Colored acrylic bins are easy to find, and you could choose red and clear for Valentine’s Day displays, or pastels for spring and Easter.

Note that this tip also works well if your store is located in a city with a high school, college, or professional sports team. Showcase your candy in containers of the team’s colors!

Tip #3: Keep Your Eyes Open for New Candy Store Display Fixtures

Traditional candy display fixtures have survived the test of time because they’re functional and reliable; when it comes to clear plastic containers and colored acrylic bins, for example, there’s definitely no reason to fix what isn’t broken.

However, wholesalers and retailers that specialize in display fixtures are always coming out with new kinds of candy store display fixtures, and it’s wise for you to keep your eyes peeled for these releases. Trying out new fixtures isn’t “fixing what isn’t broken”; rather, it’s adding visual appeal and new convenience to your displays – and customers always appreciate that!

Tip #4: Reuse Old Candy Display Fixtures in New Ways

Depending on the kind of store you manage, you might have old display fixtures lying around that – while they weren’t originally used for, or maybe not even intended for, candy displays – would work well to showcase various kinds of sweet treats.

Tip #5: Don’t Confuse Your Customers!

In an effort to keep things fresh and unique, you might be tempted to rearrange your store or reposition your candy displays from time to time. Keep in mind that while rearranging your store and repositioning your displays every now and then is fine, and sometimes necessary, doing it often will only confuse and frustrate your regular customers.

You want to give your customers a sense of familiarity and comfort when they visit your store, and that’s tough to do when your constant changes make them feel as if they’re in a completely different store every time they visit. Unless it’s absolutely time to rearrange or reposition things, keep your steps to keeping your displays fresh and unique to the above four tips.

Are You Using the Right Candy Store Equipment?

You want to make sure you're using the best candy store equipment, whether you're displaying candy in an old-fashioned candy store or your everyday convenience store, gas station, or even toy store.

If you're not sure whether you're using the best candy display fixtures for your store, ask yourself the following questions. Keep in mind that if you haven't yet chosen your candy fixtures, these questions will help you make the best choice once it's time to order.

Question #1: Is your candy attractively displayed?

You’ve probably heard the phrase, “It’s all about presentation.” While it’s important that you’re selling candy your customers want to buy, it’s also important you’re displaying this candy in the most attractive way possible. In other words, candy containers in fun or convenient shapes are going to work better than just setting the candy on the counter in the same shipping box it arrived in, right?

Question #2: Is your candy conveniently displayed?

You might create the most attractive candy displays around, but they’re useless if your customers can’t conveniently access the candy. For example, you should make sure your racks rotate if they’re positioned in a tight spot, as well make sure your candy containers are positioned to high on a shelf or rack.

Question #3: Has your candy store equipment impaired your customers’ convenience?

This is especially important when it comes to choosing display racks of any variety. You must make sure your racks, tables, and other displays are positioned in such a way that your customers are able to both easily view the candy as well as move around them to another location in your store.

Question #4: Have you chosen the best candy store equipment for your store?

This question might seem a bit odd – as the point of this article is to help you determine whether you’re using the right equipment, after all – but, depending on the kind of store you have, there are certain kinds of candy store fixtures that are better suited than others.

For example, if you manage a store that sells candy, but isn’t in the business of selling ONLY candy, you might want to consider purchasing pre-filled candy displays such as gumball machines, lollipop trees, or even pre-filled bucket racks. You can find these display fixtures filled with popular and novelty candies sure to please your customers AND save you some time when it comes to setting up your displays!

Question #5: Is your candy store equipment safest for your store’s environment?

There are two factors you need to consider when determining whether your candy store fixtures are safe for your store’s environment:
  1. Your store’s usual volume of traffic.
  2. The rowdiness of your store’s usual customers.
If your store generally sees high volumes of traffic – or, even if your store doesn’t see high volumes of traffic but the traffic it does see usually consists of excited, hyper children – you want candy fixtures that will withstand any accidents such traffic can cause. To make sure you have these kinds of fixtures in place, consider these two tips:
  1. Choose your containers wisely. Specifically, choose whether you use glass or plastic containers wisely.
  2. Make sure your display stands – whether they be wire display racks, wicker basket displays, or wooden table displays – wisely. Make sure whatever kind of display stand you choose will hold up to customers bumping into them, leaning over them, or even trying to rotate them when they’re models not meant to be rotated.

Creating Candy Displays for Party Stores

If you manage a party store, you know that there are just as many different kinds of party supplies as there are parties! However, the one staple that seems welcome at almost every kind of party is candy. So, it only makes sense that your party store should have a candy display.

How do you create an effect candy display for your party store? One that offers convenience for your customers and a lucrative stream of income for your party store?

Start by asking – and answering – the following three questions.

1. What Kind of Candy Supplies Does My Store Sell?

This is the simple part: The kind of candy your party store sells will help you determine which plastic containers you should use for your displays as well as where in your store you should situate those displays. For now, just get a mental visual (of course, a spreadsheet doesn’t hurt!) of the kinds of candy your party store sells.

2. Which Plastic Containers Would Best Display My Candy?

Do you sell bulk unwrapped candy ideal for piñatas? Do you sell bars of candy great for gift or treat bags? What about lollipops, gumballs, and novelty candy?

Party stores cater to a variety of party candy needs, so it’s probably safe to say your party store sells a wide assortment of candy. This means you’re going to need to look at an array of plastic containers and other display fixtures for showcasing that candy.

The most important things you should consider about your candy as you’re determining the best display fixtures include:
  • The size and weight of you different candy types.
  • Whether your candy is wrapped or unwrapped.
Of course, you can’t make a final decision on the kind of display fixtures you’re going to use to create your party store candy display until you decide where in your store you’re going to situate those displays.

3. Where in My Store Should I Display My Candy?

Where you situate your candy display depends largely on both the amount and types of candy you’re selling and the kinds of display fixtures you’re using (or want to use). Just as there are display fixtures suited for every kind of candy, there are also display fixtures suited for certain areas of your store.
  • Countertop and Point of Sale (POP) Displays: Creating a candy display on your party store’s candy display and POP areas works best if you’re using small kinds of candy. Plastic containers of various sizes as well as small wire display racks work great for countertop and POP displays.
  • Floor Displays: Floor displays of party store candy are great for every size of candy. Create a floor display if you’re displaying large candy like candy bars, or just large numbers of small candy like bulk wrapped and unwrapped candy. For floor displays, you can use everything from plastic containers situated on wire display racks or convenience store racks to tall rotating displays like 30-bucket rotating racks.
  • Wall Displays: Because they’re hanging from the wall, it’s best to only use small, lightweight kinds of candy for wall displays. Look for display fixtures such as slat walls or pegboard racks, as well as the plastic containers, cubes, and pegs that go with them, or consider wire bucket racks designed to hang from or mount to your wall.

3 Display Fixtures for Creating Countertop Candy Displays

Countertop candy displays are lucrative merchandise options for a wide variety of businesses. Stores that already specialize in selling food items, such as candy stores, grocery stores, and convenience stores, can benefit from candy displays on their countertops, as can businesses that generally focus on selling other kinds of merchandise, like gift shops, bookstores, toy stores, and even hotels and motels.

Countertops are ideal places to create candy displays because these areas are generally the last places customers are before they checkout and leave. Countertop displays allow customers to see the available candies without having to hunt for them and, because nearly everyone loves candy, many customers are likely to make a purchase as they’re checking out.

Of course, in order to create an attractive, effective, and convenient countertop display of candy, you have to think about the best ways you can showcase the candy. Below are three common display fixtures ideal for candy displays on countertops.

Candy Containers

Some store owners opt to create their own candy displays (as opposed to using display racks; see below) and in order to do this they need to use candy containers. The most popular kinds of candy containers include:
  • Plastic candy containers and plastic fish bowls
  • Glass candy jars and glass fish bowls
Note that these containers come in many different shapes and sizes. Make sure you choose the size and shape that will work best with your countertop’s space as well as the material (plastic, glass, or wood) that will work best with your store’s traffic volume. Also remember that if you’re display unwrapped candies you’ll need containers with accessories like lids and scoops.

Display Racks

Although there are two basic kinds of display racks (rotating and fixed position), when it comes to choosing display racks for your countertop’s candy display, it might feel as if the possibilities are endless!
  • Revolving Display Racks: Revolving display racks include wooden racks with wooden baskets, pegboard racks with two or four sides, and spinning racks great for hanging small bags of candy. Some store owners also use turntable cereal dispensers, filling the tubes with candy instead of cereal.
  • Fixed Position Display Racks: Fixed position display racks include bucket racks with buckets designed to sit or hang, and racks with shelves for placing candy containers (these racks mostly resemble traditional convenience store racks; they’re just smaller versions that fit on your countertop).
As is the case with the many different kinds of candy containers, fixed position and revolving display racks are available in an assortment of sizes and, if you’re displaying unwrapped candies you should also look for accessories like lids and scoops.

Pre-Filled Candy Displays

Pre-filled candy displays are ideal for store’s that are just getting started as well as busy store owners who don’t have a lot of time to dedicate to arranging their countertop displays.

Store owners can find pre-filled candy displays in most of the same forms of the empty containers and display racks. For example, it’s possible to order both pre-filled candy containers (plastic or glass) as well as display racks with buckets already filled with candy.

Keep in mind that pre-filled lollipop trees are also convenient options for countertop candy displays.

3 Tips for Using Gumball Machines in Your Business

Gumball machines are extremely popular display tools for a number of businesses. Every establishment from convenience stores to hotels can use gumball machines to offer their customers extra sweet treats, snacks, or toys – all the while increasing sales.

1. Think about the Location of Your Gumball Machines

Gumball machines work well in the following locations:
  • Just on the inside or outside of the store’s entryway. Because the merchandise – the gumballs, other treats, or small toys – are enclosed in the machine’s heads, there’s little chance a customer with sticky fingers can walk away without paying.
  • At the ends of the store’s aisles. Placing the machines in high-traffic areas allows more customers to see them and maybe make a quick purchase while they’re already shopping.
  • Near the store’s countertop and register. Situating your machines near the checkout puts the merchandise in front of customers – and gives them one last chance for a treat – before they leave.
2. Consider the Number of Heads for Your Gumball Machines

The “head” of a gumball machine is the clear round or square container at the top that holds the gumballs or other merchandise. Gumball displays are available with
as few as one head and as many as eight heads.

As you’re considering the number of heads to include, consider the following factors:
  • The different kinds of merchandise you want to display in your machines. If you only want to sell one kind of gumball – or, just gumballs, period – then a machine with one head will work for you. However, if you want to sell an assortment of gumballs or a variety of candies, treats, or small toys like bouncy balls, then you might want to select displays that offer several heads.
  • The amount of traffic you expect your machines to see. If your store experiences a high volume of customers, chances are a display with several gumball heads will work best for you; but, if your store is small and doesn’t experience a high number of customers, you might want to use a display with just one, or a few, heads.
3. Have Fun with Your Gumball Machines!

Gone are the days of using only traditional gumball machines with round or square heads. These days, you can find gumball machines in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and styles!

Spice up your display with machines in
fun shapes like rocket ships and with clear stands so customers can see their gumballs as they travel down to greet them! You can also fill your gumball machines with other kinds of merchandise – both edible and non-edible – such as pieces of candy, peanuts, trail mix, and bouncy balls.

3 Important Factors for Creating a Candy Display

Whether you manage a convenience store, candy shop, or bookstore, if you’re thinking of creating a candy display you probably have a few questions about how to get started.

What kinds of candies should you use? Should you order bulk wrapped candies or bulk wrapped candies? Where can you find bulk candy for wholesale prices? And how should you display all of this candy?

1. Consider Your Store and Its Customers

The kind of
candy you display in your store should reflect both your store’s “atmosphere” as well as the kinds of customers you serve on a daily basis.

For example, if you manage a convenience store or gas station, you probably serve a variety of customers from all walks of life. This means your candy selection will need to reflect the tastes of each of those customers – or, at least, the bulk of those customers. Perhaps you’ll want to offer a selection of gourmet-style candies as well as a larger selection of popular and novelty candies like Jolly Ranchers, Jawbreakers, Runts, and an assortment of lollipops and suckers.

At the same time, if your store is a specialty shop of any sort, you’ll want your candy selection to reflect that. For example, candy stores that pay homage to candy shops of olden days might want to include classic kinds of candies like gumballs or “penny candies.” A shop that caters to a mature customer base, on the other hand, might want to focus more on gourmet chocolates.

2. Think about the Location of Your Candy Display

The location of the candy display is an especially important factor for storeowners who sell a variety of candies – and a variety of other kinds of merchandise – to consider.

For example, if your store sells merchandise geared toward children, such as toys, coloring books and crayons, and board games, it’s a good idea to situate a small display of your novelty or “more fun” candies – the kinds of candies that appeal to children – in these areas.

3. Compare the Best Candy Display Tools

Now that you know what kind of candy you want to sell, it’s time to think about the best way to display that candy – in other words, you need the display tools guaranteed to showcase your candy in the most attractive and convenient ways.

Some of the most popular display tools include:
* Note that you can find a variety of display racks designed for countertop displays and floor displays.

Just as when you were choosing the kind of candy your store should sell, as you’re choosing your display racks you should consider your store’s atmosphere. For example, plastic containers and fishbowls and wire rack displays work great for all store types, but glass jars and fishbowls and wooden display racks and baskets add an extra elegance to your displays.

Pre-Filled Candy Displays: Learn Your Options

Pre-filled candy displays are perfect for every kind of retail business. Candy stores, gas stations, convenience stores, bookstores, gift shops, even hotels and motels – they’re all perfect places to situate a pre-filled candy display. Just as importantly, pre-filled candy displays are perfect for:
  • New stores that need help stocking before Opening Day.
  • Established stores that want to add candy to their merchandise selection but don’t have the time to hand select each and every piece and display.
If your store falls into one of those categories, it’s time to take a look at your pre-filled candy display options.

Gumball Machines

A gumball machine is probably one of the most popular candy displays around. These machines are perfect for nearly every kind of business – from convenience stores and grocery stores to actual candy stores and other specialty shops – and they’re available in an assortment of sizes and styles.

The kind of machine you choose will depending on where you want to situate it and how much space you have to work with. You can find single-head gumball machines designed to sit on your countertop or stand on the floor, or you can find elaborate displays with as many as eight heads. You can even find gumball machines in fun styles like rocket ships and designed to show the gumballs rolling down the escape!

Lollipop Displays

A
lollipop display is another popular kind of candy display for various businesses.

Traditional lollipop trees work best for stores that have room for floor displays, but you can find lollipop displays made of an assortment of sucker styles and flavors situated within decorated cardboard containers or acrylic bins. These kinds of lollipop displays are best for stores that plan to situate the displays on their countertops.

Plastic Containers

Plastic containers pre-filled with candy are excellent choices if you simply want to display candy on your countertop as add-on merchandise at checkout. You can find these plastic containers pre-filled with an assortment of candies including gumballs, Jawbreakers, Tootsie Rolls, Sugar Babies, and Strawberry Bon Bons.

Keep in mind that once you’ve sold all the candy in your pre-filled plastic candy containers, you can either refill them with more candy to sell or use them for another purpose entirely!

Wall, Floor, and Countertop Displays

These kinds of pre-filled candy displays take plastic containers to the next level. They are generally comprised of plastic candy containers or buckets filled with popular candies and situated on display racks small enough to
showcase on your countertop, large enough to use as floor displays, or designed to hang as a wall display.

If your store has enough room, you might want to consider even
larger floor candy displays. These displays are tall enough and wide enough to act as focal points on your store’s floor or even entire aisles.

Wooden Baskets and Racks

Wooden baskets and racks pre-filled with candies are the more rustic versions of traditional candy displays made of plastic containers and wire racks. Most often, you can find these wooden baskets and racks designed as “tree” displays sized for both floor and countertop displays, or floor displays of wooden racks that hold the baskets on shelves.

Unique Ways to Display Your Candy

Whether you operate a convenience store, grocery store, and gift shop, if you’re in the business of selling any amount of candy you also should be in the business of display that candy in creative, unique ways.

Candy is popular worldwide, and customers generally don’t need any persuasion when it comes to purchasing it; however, visually appealing candy displays are more likely to catch your customers’ attention and increase your candy sales.

Create Candy Displays with Plastic Containers or Glass Jars

Unless your sweet and sour merchandise only consists of candy bars or bags of candy, you need containers for your candy displays. Probably the two most popular kinds of candy containers are plastic containers and glass jars.

Both are available in various sizes and shapes and are reusable, and each offer their own special perks:
  • Plastic containers are extremely durable and available in an assortment of colors, which makes creating a unique candy display even easier.
  • Glass containers are more easily breakable, but offer an elegant “feel” to your candy display that plastic containers generally can’t accomplish.
Keep in mind that if you’re planning to display unwrapped candies, you should look for food grade candy containers with scoops customers can use to access the candy and lids to keep the candy clean in between customers.

Discover the Versatility of Candy Display Racks

Candy display racks fit no one mold – there are numerous kinds for you to choose from!
  • Think about the amount of space your store allows you to work with, as well as the amount of candy you want to display, and then choose floor racks, countertop racks, or a mix of both styles.
  • Consider your store’s theme or overall look. Wire display racks, for example, are available in classic colors like white, black, and red. And, if you’re using accessories like plastic containers on your display racks, clear will match every theme while colored containers will add visual appeal.
  • Determine your store’s environment. Fast-paced businesses like convenience stores and gas stations often choose sturdy, wire display racks for showcasing candy, while slower-paced, charming stores like specialty shops often like using wooden display racks.
Have Fun with Pre-Filled Candy Displays

If you don’t think you’re creative enough to arrange your own attractive candy displays, or you simply just don’t have the time, maybe you should take a look at pre-filled candy displays. These kinds of displays are available in a wide variety of designs and perfect for everything from gumballs and lollipops to bags of candy and candy bars.

You can find gumball machines, lollipop trees or racks, and wire displays all pre-filled with candy and perfect for floor or countertop displays. Also available are sizeable candy displays designed to line your store’s walls, act as focal points in the center of your store, or even function as aisles.

Some of these pre-filled candy displays also break away from the norm and are available in unique designs. For example, you can find gumball machines resembling rocket ships and acrylic lollipop displays in interesting shapes.

Creating Countertop Displays for Your Specialty Shop

If you’ve ever been to an old-fashioned ice cream parlor, you can probably remember the thrill of gazing upon the sea of chocolate chips, multicolored sprinkles, nuts, raisins, and gummy candies neatly lined up along the shop’s countertop just waiting for you to dive in. Having the freedom to select your own toppings is as exciting for children as it is for adults, and the convenience of not having to point to each and every kind of sprinkle or nut you want is unbeatable.

Specialty shops like ice cream parlors, yogurt shops, and bagel shops create these kinds of displays on countertops to add convenience to their customers’ experience, as well as attractively display everything they have to offer. Whether your shop specializes in baked goods and pastries, desserts like ice cream, or healthy treats like yogurt, chances are you can only increase your customers’ convenience when you create a countertop display.

Displays Allow for Customer Convenience

When you display your store’s merchandise along a countertop, you’re adding convenience to your customers’ shopping experience. Not only are your customers able to take their time selecting what they want, but they’re also able to choose from an organized display of items.

Consider these ideas as you’re planning your countertop display:
  • You can use food grade plastic containers to create displays of the assortment of bagels, donuts, brownies, or other baked goods and pastries your store sells. Look for containers with lids to keep your food safe from debris, and make sure to include plastic tongs with each container so your customers can easily grab the food item they want.
  • You can use round or square plastic containers along your countertop to store and display the toppings you offer for any ice cream or yogurt you might sell. These containers are available in a variety of sizes and you can situate them along your countertop or you can display them using wire display racks sized to fit your countertop. Using displays racks is also a great idea for making the most of the countertop space you have to work with. You might want to purchase these containers with lids as well, and depending on the kinds of toppings you’re offering you might also be interested in plastic containers with hand grips.
  • You can include items like utensils, napkins, and drinking cups, lids, and straws in your countertop display, too (or, depending on the layout of your store, you can create an entirely separate display for these items).
And remember: Creating countertop displays not only allows for customer convenience, but it also frees up your time to see to other customers.

Sell Additional Merchandise with Extra Displays

If your shop sells more than just food items or the kinds of toppings you’d include with ice cream and yogurt, you can create a countertop display to showcase your additional merchandise. Additional merchandise might include:
  • Prepackaged food items like candy, cookies, or chips.
  • Non-edible items like children’s toys, souvenirs, and handmade crafts from local artisans.
You can easily use plastic containers for these kinds of displays, and depending on the amount of countertop space you have to work with you might also want to situate these containers atop wire display racks.
